15th AF B-17F with 54 Bomb Markers

Can anyone identify this veteran B-17F of the 15th AF with 54 bomb markers?
I'm thinking 2. 97 , 99 or 301BG

Yes must be Italy one of the Libs which survived
WWII probably by 1945. If you can tell me which the
shot was taken in Italy I may come up with an answer
it seems like Nappoli airfield but I am not certain.

Isn't the a/c a B-7F and not a "Lib"?

Re: 15th AF B-17F with 54 Bomb Markers

I'm guessing from the picture that the aircraft had passed into some type of utility role at the time the photo was taken. (Lack of guns, stripped of paint except for bomb markings/pin-up girl)

Looks like a late-war B-26.

Not quite, Ed. A B-26 had a nose wheel...

Re: 15th AF B-17F with 54 Bomb Markers

Picture appears to be from a set taken at Pomigliano d'Arco airfield near Naples, if I go by eBay.
Mainly used by USAAF medium bombers and fighters, so if B-17 was stationed there, then a squadron hack to be likely.

Regards,

Leendert
