Horbaczewski's death and crash site.
I asked this question on this forum several years ago but lost the information. The thread doesn't seem to have been archived.
I was wondering if there has ever been an investigation or excavation of the crash site of S/Ldr Horbaczewski's Mustang, or if anything has ever been found at the site. Was there ever a report done, or do records exist of the original discovery of the site and removal and burial of the remains. I seem to remember in the original answer that the wreckage was originally found by an American grave registration team, and that the site wasn't discovered until 1947(?) Hope someone here might be able to help. Cheers, Richard |

Re: Horbaczewski's death and crash site.
I do have an extensive report in French. I will try to find it and can let you have copy. PM me with your e mail address.
The site was visited/found by the late Al Brown a few years ago. What is your interest? |

Re: Horbaczewski's death and crash site.
Hello Richard,
The archives of the Red Cross gave just after the war the village of Vellennes (Oise) where the Mustang of Horbaczewski crashed. Bertrand |

Re: Horbaczewski's death and crash site.
Richard
Horbaczewski crashed just off the east end of Beauvais Nivillers runway. Germans removed the surface wreckage, and the aircraft was not dug up until 1947. Reputedly Horbaczewski's mother did an extensive search which led to the dig. The problem was that Horbaczewski's body was pressed below the engine, and a full recovery was needed. 1 MREU was responsible IIRC. There is a report filled by F/L Pedder(?), which I have seen in English, French and Polish versions, providing few details on identification. |

Re: Horbaczewski's death and crash site.
Hi Richard
If it is any help, he is buried in a CWGC grave at Creil Communal Cemetery. S/Ldr Eugeniusz P Horbaczewski, DSO,DFC, P2198, PAF. age 26. D 18/8/44. Grave- Plot 1, Grave379 This comes from a list I have giving non-Commonwealth Airmen for whose memorials and Graves CWGC is responsible Regards Dick Last edited by Ex Shack; 11th November 2008 at 15:30. |
