Rep. Jennifer O'Mara

·
It is with a heavy heart that we recently learned of the passing of Lt. William Rice. Lt. William “Woody” Rice was a lifelong Delaware County resident and lived in Morton during his later years.
In 1942, at the age of 19, Lt. Rice enlisted with the Army Air Corps and was sent to the Tuskegee Institute for College Training Detachment to finish his education and begin his military training.
Shortly after attending Tuskegee Institute, Lt. Rice completed his primary and advanced flying training at Tuskegee Air Base. He received his wings and rank of Flight Officer on August 4th, 1944. Four months later, Lt. Rice was ordered overseas with the Tuskegee Airmen, 100th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group. He was station at Rametelli Air Base in Italy and would fly more than 30 combat missions during the war. In 1946, Lt. Rice was discharged from the Army Air Corps and returned to home to start his family and work for the Pennsylvania Railroad and Boeing until his retirement.
Lt. Rice was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, gardener, and jazz enthusiast. He also collected WWII memorabilia and was featured in “The Black List,” a collection of personal narratives of black experience in America through the telling of 25 African Americans. Thank you, Lt. Rice, for your service and dedication to our community.
