Hptm. Friedrich Muer, IV./JG53

Hello, I'm seeking information on Hptm. Friedrich Muer who was a Staffelkapitaen in III./JG76 and Gruppenkommandeur of IV./JG53. I know that he was KIA on a 2 Jan 45 mission in Bf109G-14, werknummer 464201. Can anyone tell me the details of this mission? Location? Opposing allied unit(s)? Thanks in advance.

Regards, Gary Koch

Re: Hptm. Friedrich Muer, IV./JG53

Hi,

the 5 a/c of the IV/JG53 returned from recce task (was conducted in area of Strassburg) and they were bounced by ca. 8 P-51 by landing. Though the warnings of the traffic control Hpt.Muer tried to land and was quickly s/d. This occured over airfield in Echterdingen. The IV/JG53 lost all together 4 Bf109`s in this incident.

Re: Hptm. Friedrich Muer, IV./JG53

Hi Chris,

Quick question. So you believe Muer may have been shot down by the 405 FS? According to AFHRA records, the 405 FS was credited with 3 kills that day. The records also show that 375th FS was credited with a total of five kills that day. They were also a P-51 outfit, but I don't know what missions they flew, where they flew, or their enemy opposition that day. Any possibility it could be them? 10 miles east of Pirmasens is quite a way from Echterdingen for the 405th claims. I used to be stationed at HQ USEUCOM in Stuttgart and I went to Echterdingen airfield quite a bit.

Thanks, Gary
