Photo LVG B.II

Hello,

There is currently on ebay at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-Flugzeu...AAAOSwfQted2Gw

a photo of a crashed aircraft. On a component in the left foreground can be seen Typ D.6 which identifies the aircraft as a LVG B.II. Im looking for assistance in reading the text to the left of that as it might be the serial of the machine. Can anyone assist?

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo LVG B.II

Hi Clint

No good answer, but the digits looks like 638 or 658 to me, but that includes very much hesitation on my part.

I am not even sure what aircraft part I am looking at. It seems to be a part of the engine cowling or something like that. Did the Germans actually put the aircraft's Bestellnummer there? Could it be some kind of WNr?

I was also interested in your connection between Typ D.6 and the LVG B.II.
I know that Grosz called the B.I Typ D.IV, but that is about as far as I go. I suppose LVG had their own designations for their aircraft (early Eindeckers were called E.I and up), so it is logic they called their Doppeldeckers D.I and up. Is there a list of LVG designations somewhere?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo LVG B.II

Hi Stig,

First the easy bit D.6. A manufacturer's designation. I take it you have a copy of Die-Deutschen-Militarflugzeuge-1910-1918 by Kroschel and Stutzer, I got the id from there.Near the top of each column there's a manufacturer's designation as well as the military one.

As for what the component is we're looking at no idea I'm afraid. If the number is either 638 or 658 then no LVG B.II tie in of which I'm aware. I think when we were discussing the naval Fokker D.VII thread it was apparent that the Bestellnummer could appear in a number of places. I'm not saying that that is what we're seeing though.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo LVG B.II

Hello,

Currently on ebay at :

https://www.ebay.de/itm/1WK-Kampfflu...AAAOSwtElefdAz

is a photo of a crashed LVG B.II a machine from the batch B.888/14 to B.956/14, so given what can be seen on the photograph a slim number, possibly a 1 is likely the missing digit.

Clint
