Re: FAA Corsair JS643

The acceptance date would likely have been in the early spring of 1944. Possibly the first entry for 643 in Ray's book is wrong.

Re: FAA Corsair JS643

I believe the photo was taken by an American at the base as it resembles numerous other photos of U.S. aircraft at Pax River. Most if not all FT aircraft were documented while at Pax River. Personally, I believe the date to be correct.

Another example,

BuNo 04691, dated March 15, 1944

Re: FAA Corsair JS643

04691 was a Royal Navy lend-lease transfer so that cannot be the aircraft in the photo. It looks like 045--.

Wouldn't it be odd for the original Flight Test report to use the wrong BuNo. in the report and on all of the photos that are included in the report? In the .pdf, pages 4, 22, 23 & 24 show 04691 and March 15, 1944. These are "original source" documents. Perhaps 04691 went to the RN after testing at Pax River?

Re: FAA Corsair JS643

04691 may have been the aircraft tested but it would have had a Royal Navy paint scheme and, very likely, clipped wings. It was not one of the F3As accepted by the US Navy. The photo is probably of a different US Navy F3A.

04691 was JS471, whose first mention in Ray's book is for March 1945. That allows for 1944 testing at Patuxent.

Re: FAA Corsair JS643

Read the first paragraph on page 5 of the report.
04691 -

...and now back to the mystery of 08638.

Re: FAA Corsair JS643

The more I look at these 2 examples the more I wonder if the accepted Bu Number to RAF number mapping is right

Re: FAA Corsair JS643

The problem is that the aircraft in the photo has a US Navy colour scheme and full-span wings, yet 04691 was never accepted by the US Navy.

Two US Navy F3A-1s tested at Patuxent were 04675 and 04678, so it is likely one of these two.

Did you not read Page 5? This is 04691 in a US Navy Color scheme with American markings as stated in the original document. I even included a close up of the BuNo in my post above. There would be no reason for the US Navy to falsify photos in their report. I'm sorry, but you are incorrect.
