Re: RAF Beaufort loss info needed 02 Sep 1941

Just because the Beaufort crews did not see any fighters until after their attack does not mean there wasn't any.....

Very true

But two people claimed and only one Beaufort was lost. Just because someone makes a claim and an aircraft is lost does not mean that the two are connected.

The Blenheim making the claim also appears to be mistaken as I cannot find a JG77 loss either

My source for the two claims was Prien et al's JFV 5

Looks like JG77 claims are not the easiest to decypher

Correct Martin

I usually stay off a discussion of "who got who" since it usually boils down to what I said regarding "which side
one is on" (No political standpoint, mind you!).

Don't know why Prien and Mombeek differ. If you read Mombeek's books about JG 5 you will see a lot more
differences than this.

Agree, there are no recorded German fighter losses that day.

There must be some mistake in the British combat report. No way that the gunner shot at the Bf 109 at 10 yards.
That is a collision! 100 perhaps?

Cheers
Stig

Re: RAF Beaufort loss info needed 02 Sep 1941

It might be worth looking at National Archives HW 13/29: German Naval Air Activity (GNA): Carrier- and land-based units (1940 Dec 2–1941 Sept 14).

This file comes under the category "Government Code and Cipher School: Second World War Intelligence Summaries Based on Sigint" and I haven't seen this particular one, just examples from later in the war.

There is an account of this day's action over Norway in my book, Graf Zeppelib's Eagles, published by Chandos last year.

But unfortunately I cannot afford £75 to find out the answer

Could you give us the edited highlights?

Re: RAF Beaufort loss info needed 02 Sep 1941

Francis,

Can you please shed some light on this subject as we are all abit lost on this topic I think. Did Ehrler claim anything on the 2 Sep or not?

Baffled now, for my new book on Ehrler, I am going to mention the event on 30 August and 02 September as both sides of the fence there is strong points to say that Ehrler did and didn't claim this!

Look forward to you putting us all right.

Thanks

Danny
