Dornier 17Z lost 5.10.40 1/KG2.
Hi, during the evening 4/5.10.40 a Dornier 17Z coded U5+GH W.Nr.1212 of
1/KG2 became lost after an operational sortie and crashed nr. Krefeld, the aircraft was written off. I have Uffz Karl Laub injured with at least two possibly three of the other crew also injured. Would anybody have the names of the crew involved or the NVM copy to substantiate this incident. I have evidence to suggest the Bordfunker maybe Werner Kahnt. Any help would be appreciated. Best regs, Steve. |

Re: Dornier 17Z lost 5.10.40 1/KG2.
Steve; Balke says 3-4 Oct and the only injury was Laub and this must be based on the NVM to which he had access?

Hi Chris, thank you for the clarification.
I got the three NCO's injured from the book " The Battle of Britain Then and Now" Mk.V pg.675. Perhaps Peter Cornwell if looking can add anymore? Best regs, Steve. |

Re: Dornier 17Z lost 5.10.40 1/KG2.
Hello Steve,
according to Balke page 183 the Uffz Laub crew took off on 4 Oct 1940 around 9 p.m. So the correct crash date is 5 Oct 1940. In the primary source Gen.Qu. loss return (8 Oct 1940, item 14) is listed: 5.10. 1./KG 2 Feindflug, Ort: Krefeld, Ursache: Absturz infolge Verorientierung (Besatzung abgesprungen). Do 17 Z-2 Werk-Nr. 1202, U5+GH 100%, Besatzung unverletzt. 1st correction 11 Oct 1940: Füge hinzu: 3 Verletzte. 2nd correction 13 Oct 1940: Berichtige Werk-Nr. in 1212. Regards Leo |

Re: Dornier 17Z lost 5.10.40 1/KG2.
Hi Leo, thank you for your information on this incident.
As I posted previously this aircraft was lost on a sortie to London during the night of 4/5.10.40, three crew were injured. I know for sure Uffz. Karl Laub was piloting, I have the flugbuch copy for Werner Kahnt who was the bordfunker on board this a/c. he states takeoff was 19.25hrs and the time of loss I believe 00.40hrs. Code was given as U5+GH. Just need to confirm the others not named but as injured should be in the relevant NVM copy if it survives! Best regs, Steve. |

Hi Chris that's a great shame, his knowledge and expertise will be sorely missed on this board.
Best regs, Steve. |
