Fw 190 A-3/U7

I have 3 photos showing this aircraft with both 7 & 9./JG 2. Some records state these were tropical filters whilst others say they are one of 3 Höhenjäger (Wk Nrs 528, 531, 532). Can anyone please comment?

I'm just shooting in the dark here, but I'm pretty certain that posting the photos so people can look at them will help in their identification.

If it helps-here is one photo taken at Brest late 1942-early 1943 so not North Africa!

Re: Fw 190 A-3/U7

Yep. That's the high altitude version of the intake. The normal intake was inside the cowling. The exterior intake replaced the normal one by placing it directly into the airflow.

The tropical (dust) versions were ribbed (corrugated) which caused a vortex that slowed and funneled particulates into the filter.

P.S. They needed to retain the interior intake and merge it with the exterior one which would have doubled the mass of the airflow to make the design successful.
