Loss Do 217 Wnr 8389 Ln Versuchs Rgt on 29th January 1943

Dear all,

I hope someone can help me out this query:

Pilot Oblt Heinz Brodtmann was killed in Do 217E-2 Wnr 8389 during a crash or crashlanding at Soesterberg airfield, The Netherlands.

The concerned unit was a 'Ln Versuchs Rgt' but I doubt if this is right. As far as I know the Luftnachrichten Regiments were only ground units.

I cannot find the Wnr in the GQM lists for that date, so I wonder if things aren't mixed up one way or another.

Perhaps somebody can shed a light on this?

Thanks in advance,

Hans Nauta

The Ln.-Versuchs-Rgt. (Stab at Köthen) had some 25 Kompanien (1.-25.) including a 6.(Flieger)Kp. The Kp. and other components of the Rgt. had Fi 156s, He 111s, Do 17s, Do 217s, Bf 109s, Fw 190s, etc.

Re: Loss Do 217 Wnr 8389 Ln Versuchs Rgt on 29th January 1943

My Do 217 data base does not have any Do 217s in the 8xxx block. I know my list is not complete, but since there isn't a single entry, it might be a typo.

Best Regards,

ArtieBob

Thank you all very much for the quick clarification of the unit, correction of the Wnr and additional details.

Another query solved!

Re: Loss Do 217 Wnr 8389 Ln Versuchs Rgt on 29th January 1943

Thanks Matti for the identification of the specific Kompanie charged with the Unfall. At that time, 7.(Fliegerversuchs-)/Ln.-Versuchs-Rgt. Köthen would have been the Kompanie that took aloft new signals equipment that could only be tested and evaluated aboard an aircraft. It may also have been used to calibrate ground radar equipment and systems.

In addition to 6.(Flieger-) and 7.(Fliegerversuchs-), 2.(RV-)/Ln.-Versuchs-Rgt. based at Köthen also had a number of aircraft, including He 111 H-6s. This Kompanie experimented with and used Richtverbindungs equipment that was used for line-of-sight voice and teletype transmissions.

A very interesting Luftwaffe signals unit!

Can anyone confirm, whether II/Ln.Vers.Rgt. Köthen should actually be 2./Ln.Vers.Rgt. Köthen?

Almost certainly not the Abteilungstab of II./Ln.-Versuchs-Rgt., but rather either 2./Ln.-Vers.Rgt. or one of the Kpn. that belonged to II./Ln.-Vers.Rgt., e.g. 6.Kp. or 7.Kp. If I had to make an educated guess, I would say either 6.Kp. or 7.Kp.
