I mention this incident in my recent article for "Britain at War". Here is the relevant extract:

"Unfortunately, casualties on No 6 Service Flying Training School, Little Rissington, were no exception to that grim rule. Indeed, just a glance at that unit’s records for the mid-August period of 1940 shows a depressing list of losses when, for example, on 17 August 1940 Sgts D Duncan and E W Osbourne lost their lives as Anson L7907 hit trees at Lodge Park, Eastington, during low flying. Two days later and Sgt J S Bell was killed and Sgt D E Paul was injured in the crash of Harvard P5788 at Northleach Lane, Hazelton, during a low-flying exercise........"

Hello Andy and All

According to RAF records, the RAF gave 19 August 1940 for Harvard P5788, involving John Studholme Bell 754390 and Sgt D E Paul 748790, of No. 6 Service Flying Training School.

The accident was investigated by Mr John D Lane on 13 September 1940 according to official paperwork, because the aircraft in which Bell of RAF Station Little Rissington was flying, "crashed to the ground". Also John Studholme Bell died on the 20 August 1940 at Northleach Field, Hazleton, Rural District, according to Mr Lane. There is no mention of low flying, only that the aeroplane in which he was flying accidentally crashed to the ground.

Mark
