On this date SLdr Neville Duke shot down a Bf109G with underwing cannons (a Kanonenboot) in the Gabes area. It crashed near a German Red Cross hospital. JG51 lost three aircraft which crashed after combat, aa the pilots survived. Did JG51 ever operate the Bf109G-4/R6?
It is possible the aircraft was either Bf 109G-4 WNr 15163 or WNr15131 best regards Keith |

Re: Bf109G-4 J6./G51 29 March 1943
Hello Keith,
on 29 March 1943 the 6./JG 51 lost the Bf 109 G-4 trop 15018 (Uffz Johannes Scholz KIA) , 15131 (belly landing at La Smala des Souassi, damage 10%, pilot N.N.) and 15163 (crash north of Gabes, 100%, pilot N.N.). Source JFV 11/I. The II./JG 51 operated Bf 109 G-4 trop which could be fitted with Rüstsatz 6 = R6 (two gondola mounted MG 151/20). The installation of a Rüstsatz did not result in a change in the aircraft’s designation. A Bf 109 G-4 or G-4 trop with Rüstsatz 6 did not become a Bf 109 G-4/R6 or G-4 trop/R6. Regards Leo |
