Allied four-engined aircraft loss near Bischofshofen, 6-7.12.1944, 05.17 hrs?

Dear all,

I have a German night fighter claim for a four-engined aircraft claimed shot down near Bischofshofen, SSE of Salzburg on the night of 6-7.12.1944, time of the claim is 05.17 hrs.

Who can tell me which aircraft was shot down/shot up in this encounter?

Thanks for any details, Theo

A "possibility" would be B-17G 44-8120, 483rd BG, 815 BS, shot down around 6:00 on December 7, 1944. They were flying a "Lone Wolf" mission to Salszburg M/Y. Crashed and crew captured at Fernhattal, Unterntauern. They were over Salzburg at 5:12 according to the MACR. Entire crew bailed out and were captured.

MACR is here, cause of crash given as unknown:

seems to say they were shot down by flak. Possibly they were damaged by flak first then attacked by a night fighter ???

This link also has the cause of the crash as unknown: https://daacda.acdh.oeaw.ac.at/entit...ers/detail/668

Hello Richard,

Excellent -thanks for sharing this info, I believe this could very well be a match to the NJ claim!

Cheers, Theo
