Fw190 losses 8 March 1943

Courtesy of http://www.aircrewremembered.com/Kra...q=8+March+1943 and Chris Goss "Luftwaffe Fighter-Bombers Over Britain".

Fw Hans Hinz of 4./SKG 10 Fw 190A-4 Werk # 47184 is KIA lost over the channel, in addition Uffz Karl Jonas of II/SKG 10 Fw 190A-5 Werk # 1079 is WIA near StLO.

Both pilots were attacking the 1st Bomb Wing USAAF which was being covered by 403 Squadron. Is it possible they were shot down by the Spitfires rather than B-17s?

Also did SKG 10 make any claims for B-17s or B-24s on this date?

regards

Keith

German records state Hinz was reported missing and Jonas wounded intercepting B-17s, that is all

RAF claims on this date during escort for this operation :-

64 Sqd. S/Ldr. W.V.Crawford Compton 2 Fw.190

122 Sqd. S/Ldr D.E.Kingaby Fw.190

403 Sqd. F/Lt. H..Godefroy Fw.190
F/Lt. H.D.MacDonald Fw.190
F/Lt.C.M.Magwood ) Fw.190 damaged
F/o. H.G.Cumming )

In his book "Lucky 13" Hugh Godefroy gives a vivid description of his victory
on pp 173 of the Stoddart 1983 paperback edition.

Re: Fw190 losses 8 March 1943

Crawford-Compton sent one fighter down in flames and believed his second victory resulted in the pilot baling out. I don't have details of Kingaby's claim. It seems they were Bf109G-4 despite being identified as Fw190.

The claims by 403 Squadron were possibly aircraft of SKG 10.

Thanks for the heads up Bruce, I will try and get a copy of "Lucky 13" to get details.

best regards

Keith
