Junkers 88 crash nr. Arundel Castle, 1940
I live in Sussex and have taken many walks around Swanbourne Lake with my family. Everytime I have visited this site I have been interested to know whether a placard or memorial exists to the Junkers 88 crew who were killed on 13th August 1940 when it crashed and tumbled into the lake. Does anyone know if this event is remembered anywhere as nobody I have spoken to here has ever heard of it?

Re: Junkers 88 crash nr. Arundel Castle, 1940
Yes apparently, according to secondary sources, this was perhaps Ju 88 A-1 6104 of II/KG 54 14.08.40. (killing Oblt. Rosse, and Uffz. Scholz, Fw. Bickel was caught on tail in parachute, pilot Hptm. Strauch baled out but died in hospital) - "The Aeroplane" May 2008, P.87, also post here on this forum by Andy Saunders 31.07.2009

Re: Junkers 88 crash nr. Arundel Castle, 1940
The Ju-88A-1 belonged to Stab II/KG 54 and was shot down by Hurricanes of 43 & 601 Sqns at 0630 during a sortie to bomb Farnborough. Oberleutnant Rose & Unteroffizier Scholz baled out and were captured unhurt. Feldwebel Bickel baled out but died and Hauptmann Strauch baled out and was discovered mortally wounded in a tree at Worthing. The 2 airmen who died are still buried in St.Andrew's Churchyard at Tangmere. (Source: the Blitz Then & Now Vol 1 by Winston Ramsey - listed for the 13th August 1940)
As for an actual memorial plaque I am not sure that it would go down well to place a plaque for aircrew that were on a bombing mission to the UK. |

Here are Bickel & Strauch's entries in the Volksbund database. There are no entries for Rose (Rosse) or Scholz possibly confirming their survival & capture...

Hi Hucks, forgive me for asking, but how do you use the Volksbund Database?
Whenever i enter a name and date and press search i get a second page asking again for the details i previously entered, and stuff like street and fax etc. Am i using this wrong? Kindest regs, Steve. |

Fill in your name, why you want access and tick the bottom box-works every time until you clear cookies and have to start all over again!

When you got that message was there an addess of the Volksbund and then a button saying Suchanfrage ausfuhren? If so just click on that button and it takes you to the results of your search. If not try another search and if nothing happens PM me your email address and I will send a screenshot of what I use to register.
