Details on loss of 622 Squadron Lancaster LM442, 24-25 February 1944 Schweinfurt raid
Dear all,
I am looking for additional details on the loss of 622 Squadron Lancaster LM442 during the 24-25 February 1944 Schweinfurt raid, especially reports of the four surviving crew members on how they were shot down. (I have the crew details and crash location 2 km NNW of Gräfendorf). Thanks for any details, cheers, Theo |

Re: Details on loss of 622 Squadron Lancaster LM442, 24-25 February 1944 Schweinfurt raid
Theo,
Pratt's statement post liberation has nothing of substance other than he was first out when he baled "25 miles SW of Schweinfurt" The MRES report states the aircraft crashed "2 kms NNW of Grafendorf" "on a hill in the woods" at approximately 2300 hrs 24 February 1944 with only one engine. No witnesses to the crash were found. The other three engines were found 500 yds from the remainder of the aircraft. The fuselage was described as in "good condition" with only the remaining engine burning Odle's statement from Stalag Luft III: On the night of 24/25 February 1944 whilst flying over enemy territory we were attacked and two engines set on fire and the elevators shot away. The Captain (F/Lt Doig) gave the order to abandon aircraft. On learning the rear gunner could not get out of his turret he sent the MU gunner to his help. A second attack followed and all the engines cut and the wings were set on fire. After being taken prisoner I met the Bomb Aimer, Engineer and Wireless Operator. The latter stated he left the aircraft at such low altitude he was certain nobody got out after him. The German authorities stated that four bodies were found in the wreckage of the aircraft. Therefore I can only assume the Pilot, Navigator and both gunners were killed. Regards, Dave |
