Re: Crew of Mosquito PRI serial W4056 - info required
Unfortunately no initials and both airmen - who became PoWs - very common names so hardly to find a match in the PoW administration. Pilot was P/O HUTCHESON and Nav P/O ALLEN. They may have been shot down by a Bf 109E of I./JG5 (perhaps Kurt Dombacher). They forcelanded their Mosquito at Beian Grande near airstrip Örland (Örlandet). Before they crashlanded they probably shot down Adolf Pürzl - Bf109 of 8./JG5.
All from an unknown source but perhaps a start for further research. Regards, Henk. |

Hi, Dont think that these PR Moquito's were armed.
And From RAF Commands site I. Hutchinson and B.K. Allen were at POW camp "L3" Alex |

Re: Crew of Mosquito PRI serial W4056 - info required
If "B.K." ALLEN and "HUTCHINSON" is correct for Camp L3 this could have been:
F/Lt I. Hutchinson - 102960 - L3-163, and F/Lt B.K. Allen - 119514 - L3-136 Henk. |

Re: Crew of Mosquito PRI serial W4056 - info required
From an obit for Hutchinson:
"Hutchinson's flying days were not over and he went on to fly unarmed Spitfire reconnaissance missions before being shot down by Me109s over Norway on a long-range mission in a specially adapted Mosquito fighter-bomber. He landed despite the tail being shot off and his navigator calmly fired a Verey pistol into a pool of petrol, blowing up the plane. Eventually they were met by a Luftwaffe officer who said in perfect English: "We've been waiting for you for a while. "I'm afraid our coffee's cold, but have some schnapps instead." Hutchinson spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft 3 the prisoner of war camp of Wooden Horse and Great Escape fame." |

Re: Crew of Mosquito PRI serial W4056 - info required
Hello guys!
Firstly I must beg your pardon for not answering soon, but I was travelling and really did not have access to the net. This is very interesting, because I read somewhere too that this particular Mosquito ( W4056 - which you Andrew added a very magnific photograph to the pleasure of most of us... ) could have been shot down by those two JG 5 pilots mentioned early. And, yes, they manouvered ( it seems so ) so sharply that a Bf 109 spun and crashed down... HOWEVER, on a Mosquito claims' list I found it seems that Oblt Herbert Huppertz from 12/JG 1 claimed a Mosquito that same 2 April 1942 near Trondheim... WHO indeed claimed and shot down this Mosquito. 2nd Question: What kind of damage the Mosquito sustained, because it seems impossible to fly without a tailplane...They could have been hit - this I do agree, but to loose the tail...and land!? I lost a good friend down here in Brazil, a "crop duster" pilot with more than 3,500 hs when he lost the tail of an aircraft he bought and was travelling aboard...Even Super Man can not fly a plane without the horizontal stabilizer! Yours Adriano PS3: Andrew, do you know the "targets" for W4056 on 2th April 1942? Was it Trondheim or something related to the Kriegsmarine? |
