Weekly DC3 Flights from Chivenor 1941
On 236 Squadrons ORB are frequent escorts to DC3 Air Line flights to Lisbon and back.
Are these Whitchurch BOAC DC3's topping up fuel tanks before leaving flown by BOAC crews in RAF uniforms and BOAC aircraft bearing military roundels and service numbers. Best regards Andy Bird |

Re: Weekly DC3 Flights from Chivenor 1941
Some background here. Looks like the planes were former KLM DC-3s, (and one DC-2) flown by Dutch crews.
According to this article, the planes were in RAF camouflage with BOAC markings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOAC_Flight_777 |

Re: Weekly DC3 Flights from Chivenor 1941
Hello,
Cannot remember where I saw it but there are pictures of one or more of these a/c parked alongside German Junker aircraft in Portugal. Story was that the crews did not fraternize. Alex |

Re: Weekly DC3 Flights from Chivenor 1941
From this link : http://forum.keypublishing.com/showt...gs-in-Portugal
"The 3 Hudsons, 1 C-47 and 2 Liberators at the back were all impounded by the Portuguese, the C-47 on left was G-AGJS , lend-lease on the KLM/BOAC Bristol-Lisbon service, the Lufthansa DC-3 foreground was D-ARPF seized from KLM, the DC-2 behind was Spanish and the Lodestar to the right was CS-ADD of AeroPortuguesa." Photo from Museu do Ar, Alverca, Lisbon One B-24 interned in Portugal was this one: 42-40772 Scheherezade' 564th BS, 389 BG. Not at all sure it is one of those pictured. http://www.americanairmuseum.com/aircraft/19377 There is also a discussion of the B-24s here: http://www.oocities.org/tavaresl.geo/research.htm Link mentions 42-40772 and several others including a Coastal Command Liberator BZ730. |

Re: Weekly DC3 Flights from Chivenor 1941
Hello Kaiyan,
Re the "Potugease" B-24's. I did look at this in February 2006 and arrived with the following. L1 - CS-ELA - B24D-95-CO -42-40772 - 398BG/564BS - August 20th, 1943. L2 - ............ - B24D-95-CO - 42-40783 - 389BG/566BS - July 2nd,1943. L3 - CS-ELB - B24D-115-CO - 42-40937 - 478BG/ - January 2nd,1944. L4 - CS-ELC - B24J -165-CO - 44-40484 - 25BG/652BS - November 18th,1944. L5 - ............ - B24D-100-CO - 42-40801 - 479BG/ - August 29th,1943. L6 - CS-ELD - B24D -5 CF - 42-63803 - 2FerryGp/4FerrySq - September 28th,1943, MACR 665. L1 was "SScheherezade". L2 was " Pistol Packing Mama". L5 was " Kraut Killer". L6 was " Cabo Verdi". L3 there were contradictory dates for this a/c, August 20th,1943 and January 2nd,1944 ? Alex |
