Does anyone recognise the marking aft of the roundel?

Later will become the 2eme escadrille of GC I/3

Re: French Beute Aircraft

Hello Bertrand,

Thanks for the reply. Interesting that the aircraft retains the markings of its previous owners as late as 1940. I wonder what unit had been operating the machine immediately prior to its capture by the Germans?

Clint

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Caudron C.59 F-APOV at:

As usual this is a long shot but does anyone have any information on which unit operated this machine in 1939-40?

Re: French Beute Aircraft

No answer to your question Clint

I think this is actually F-APQX or Y (no record of F-APOV being issued)
Seems the last letter is more like X or Y even if F-APQV also was a C.59

Cheers
Stig

Re: French Beute Aircraft

Hi Stig,

It certainly could be either of the two registrations you mention. I've had a look at Aviation Populaire ou Aviation Proletaire since posting and looking at the C.59 serials he gives for machines delivered to the S.A.P I'm actually probably going to have to go for F-APQV.

Having said that, so what follows is probably irrelavant, I notice looking at the french serials on the ab list the compiler does list a F-APOV, but with no details at all - seemingly meaning that the registration may have been issued. But as I say probably irrelevant anyway.

Regards,

Clint

Re: French Beute Aircraft

I doubt you will find a CdN for F-APOV

French researchers has so far not found anything on that registration and I believe it was simply skipped.

Wasn't both F-APQX and Y on loan from Adl'A?
They must both have been much easier to request back....

However I have chosen to keep it with the last letter unknown

Cheers
Stig

Re: French Beute Aircraft

Hi Stig,

Probably prudent, but you can deduce how I will have listed it and as far as the other two registrations, now they are not among the ones listed by Vittal Ferry in any case, although http://www.airhistory.org.uk/gy/reg_F-18.html has F-APQY as one loan from the french state, but F-APQX is last listed there as in Hanoi.I wonder why F-APOV is listed on that page at all?

Regards,

Clint
