Seeking Confirmation of a 234 Sqn Loss
Hello,
Seeking confirmation of a 234 sqdn loss for the 24th April 1942. Recent purchase of a flying modell and a metal 1/72nd modell of the same Spitfire "AZ-G". This has led me to seek out information on the pilot. From info within the magazine that accompanied the metal modell the name is given as Lieutenant. Axel Svensen. I checked FCL vol 2. This has for the 24th April 1942 234 Sqn Spitfire Vb BL924 P/O. N.H. Svendson - PoW Circus 132, Ostend,pm. Engaged by Fw190's of JG26. Pilot Danish. In a later vol there is an update - 234 Sqn is changed to 64 Sqn The name is corrected to read A. A. Svendsen The PoW is changed to read KIA. From the CWG website Svendsen is given as with 234 Sqn at date of death. For those in the west Country he was the adopted son of a Mr & Mrs Iverson from Exeter, Devon. He was just 20 years old. I would like to know - Why the alteration from 234 to 64 Squadron . Was the pilot or Spitfire moved from one Squadron to the other or what ? Where did Norman Franks get the update re Sqdn from and is it correct? Separate from the above, How many Danish pilots flew with the RAF? All for now. Await replies. Alex |

Re: Seeking Confirmation of a 234 Sqn Loss
Hello Jerry,
Thanks for the reply. That's an interesting site, had not seen it before. Still only gives ace's though as far as i have seen so far. 234 to 64 is odd it that CWG and other sources give 234, yet Norman Franks update has it as 64. Any idea as to contacting him, I used to have an e-mail address some while ago, but no responce now. All for now Alex |

Re: Seeking Confirmation of a 234 Sqn Loss
I haven't seen this thread before, and many questions may be answered by the site mentioned already.
I can assure you that the squadron was 234 sqn - I have a copy of the ORB. A.A.Svendsen was one of three Danish pilots at that time operation the three Spits bouhgt by Danish donations. Before 234 sqn he was stationed at 32 sqn. acc. to my sources. Two photos of A.A. Svendsen on the wing of BL831 'Skagen Ind' : http://images.kb.dk/image?id=dh001304 / http://images.kb.dk/image?id=dh001308. The other pilot is Joergen Thalbitzer, his best friend. There is a replica of AZ-G 'Valdemar Atterdag' at the Tangmere Museum. He was posted to 234 sqn on 3.4.42 and KIA 24.4.42. The German pilot that shot him down is - most likely - to be one of the following: Oblt. Kurt Ebersberger, Oblt. W.-F. Galland or Ofw. Hermann Hoffmann, all II./JG26. I shall not guess about the confusion, though. Regards, Mikkel Last edited by Mikkel Plannthin; 9th September 2005 at 03:30. |
