Tks Larry!

A special one aircraft, among derelict Hurricanes... possibly Reims airfield? Which type?
Noteworthy in the background what seems to be Miles Magister MQ° again (see post #48).

The British bi-plane in the middle of the photo is a DH 84 Dragon and may well be G-ACIU used by 24 Comms Sqn at the beginning of the war for flights to and from France and damaged on take off from Mourmelon France on 29th April 1940 and said to have been destroyed when airfield was evacuated in May 1940.

Regarding the Magister wearing MQ codes, it is very likely to be from 226 Sqn that flew Fairey Battles during the Battle of France. Such aircraft were used for communications and ferrying pilots to collect aircraft etc.

Hi All,
I always find it interesting when photos of destroyed a/c turn up. It must have been difficult to destroy a/c when rapidly evacuating an area.

Many thanks for sharing these informations, Larry.
De Haviland Dragon (X9395?)...evidently not totally destroyed but probably lacking part of engines and suffering structural damages.
Regarding the place, Mourmelon airfield better than Reims (although in the same area)... interesting precision.
As for the Magister, t'would be nice to discover a third photo depicting its serial number!

Hi Parabellum,

Wonderful photograph ! Thank you for posting it.

Could the Hurricane in the foreground be N2453 of 245 Squadron ? "Lost 5.40" according to Air-Britain's 'L1000-N9999'. Is that an overpainted 'X' between the 'l' and the roundel ? 245 Squadron used the code 'DX'.
