165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
Can someone tell me what claim P/O John 'Slops' Haslope*, RAAF, made on
the 20/3/44? F/O DC Eva-nationality unknown-apparently also claimed on this date. Cheers, Bruce *Later F/L, DFC |

Re: 165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
Bruce,
P/O John Mitchell Haslope (RAAF, 401788) and F/O Douglas Charles Eva (147195 and thus presumably RAF) shared a Ju-88 on March 20, 1944 at 1045, 15 m N of Vannes. Haslope was flying Spitfire IX MH852/Q and Eva Spitfire IX MH601/D. Reference: FC3; CR: Air 50/68-50&51. Both received a DFC in 1945. Frank.

Re: 165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
Hello BruceMK11,
John Haslope shot down the Komet which was one of the reasons he received the DFC. And hello Frank Olynyk, John Haslope's name is actually, John Melvill Haslope, his middle name is not Mitchell. Have a great day, MargaretH |

Re: 165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
MargaretH,
Thank you for your correction. The middle name of Mitchell is what appeared in the London Gazette for his DFC. The RAAF Nominal Role however gives his middle name as Melvill, so that is what I will use. Enjoy! Frank.

Hello Chris,
Yes, I am related, and would appreciate any information/photos you could share. I have been trying to research information for awhile and only came across this site recently. Enjoy the day, Margaret |

Re: 165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
Hi Margaret,
In case you weren't aware, Haslope's service file is online at the NAA. It includes his DFC citation, and a small personal photo, in its 47 pages. 'Spitfire, Mustang and Kittyhawk in Australian Service' by Stewart Wilson has more photos, including four frames of gun camera footage from his interception of the Me 163, and a pic of the a/c that he flew on that op. Hope this helps. Cheers, Bruce |

Re: 165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
Bruce,
if it helps DC Eva has a WWII Public Relations file at the AWM (Series AWM 65), it has a cover sheet with his DFC citn attached. The only details on the cover sheet are his name, serial number, rank (F/O) and a note which reads -'Australian in RAF'. He is also listed in Micheal Manton's 'DFCs to Australians', in the book's 'Australians in the RAF' section with Clisby, Sheen, etc. Eva had previously served with 1435 Sqn at Malta as an NCO and made several damage claims in 1942. Re: 165 Sqn claim/s, 20/3/44
Thanks for that Ian. Drew had actually brought my attention to Eva's Australian ancestry, and former service on Malta, but I don't think I knew of his AWM file.
