Ju 88 S-3 picture
Hi Clint,
Here it is, you can see the aircraft code above the swastika so it's not the one on the front page of your book. BTW: Is the "Le Culot" book any good? Does it contain photos of Ju 88s (wrecks or not..) or lists of aircraft found on the airfield? Regards, Marcel |

Ju 188 S-5
Hi Rémi,
I assume that it's just a mistake made by the British. I'm not aware that such a subtype existed and I never found any evidence (photos, accounts) from I./KG66 veterans that they ever had such a type. As can be shown from the list by Seaplanes (Thank you, BTW!), I only knew that at this stage of the war they flew the Ju 188 D-2. But maybe experts like Ed North and Artie Bob can enlighten us about this aircraft by judging from the W.Nr.? Last edited by Marcel van Heijkop; 29th December 2010 at 15:01. Reason: addition |

Re: Wanted: Crashed Enemy A/C Reports Germany & Denmark
The list im have used as basis for the information was made by Oberquartiermeister/Leitende Ingenieur beim Komm.Gen.d.dt.Lw.in Norwegen Br. Nr. 6977/45 geheim and dated 7. Mai 1945, so no British mistakes in this case, but may be a German one. I have never heard about the Ju 188S-5, but it is written like that in the list.

Thanks for the correction! That's how knowledge increases... (Is this a Signatur in the BAMA Freiburg or does it come from the Riksarkivet?) Regards, Marcel |

Re: Wanted: Crashed Enemy A/C Reports Germany & Denmark
hi,
Labelling all of the I/KG 66 Ju 188 aircraft flying to Norway as D-2 is (most) likely wrong - In my opinion - Judging from known strength list 31.12.44 (ww2.dk) - Then I/KG 66 only had Ju 88 S-3´s on strength - But BAMA data has, the I/KG 66 was indeed issued 14 aircraft on 26.02.45 (5) and 24.02.45 (9) of the Ju 188 D-3 (Beleuter) version. These had been converted (Umbau) over previous few weeks from Ju 188 D-2 (Recce) aircraft. So far, all known or indentified Ju 188 D-3´s, were from Siebel production. I can not judge "Ju 188 S-5" out as typo per se, I prefer to let it stand as it is! It could by yet another (minor) modification of Ju 188 A-2 / D-2, but so far, I have no other record of this particular machine, or if it was a "special" Umbau. Remember, the I/KG 66 was a Kampfgeschwader (Bomber Unit) and the "S" does indeed suggest a Bomber version. Also the (Ju88) S-1 and S-3 were built and used in some numbers. It´s not that unlikely there were some few (Ju188) S-5´s too. Finally a happy and prosperous new year to all. ed |

Re: Wanted: Crashed Enemy A/C Reports Germany & Denmark
The list I referred to also contains some information on the equipment of these K.G.66 aircraft. The three Ju 188D-2 aircraft listed all had 2 x 131 guns + one 120 mm cannon. They could be used as Zerstörer or Aufklärer. The Ju 188S-5 had the same equipment.
