JG 2 March 1945

I am working on the air combats between 9th Air Force and I. + II./JG 2 on the 9th of March 1945. I need some help !

- Lw.Kdo.West reports that 25 ME 109 from II./JG 2 participated in an Alarmstart against Marauder units southeast of Bonn. The losses that I have from II./JG 2 are Fw 190D-9s. Was II./JG 2 a mixed unit ?

- From what air fields did I. and II./JG 2 operate from that day ?

- Who was the Verbandsführer (leader of the mission) ?

Carsten

Re: JG 2 March 1945

This is ULTRA decrypt CX/MSS/T484/17:

Ops. day report 9/3, issued late 2300 hours 9/3.

32 Fw 190 operated on fighter bomber attacks on Remagen bridge. Bridge attacked with 14 SC 250. Presumably badly damaged. Operation in part broken off owing weather.

28 Fw 190 and 25 Me 109 operated against Marauder incursions.

9 Fw 190 reinforced battle recce over Remagen bridge without sighting enemy.

Total losses fighter ops:
Personnel: 1 - 9 - 2 Material: 2 - 9 - 0
Bombing ops: 2 Fw 190 bombing of Remagen bridge. Hits on right bank of Rhine without exact observation of results. No losses.

Notes:
1) Source almost certain above from Fl. Div. 16
2) No evidence as to the parent unit of the two Fw 190 bombers. The Fw 190 fighter bombers may possibly be drawn from JG 2, in which case a new subordination to Fliegerdiv 16 would seem to be implied. It will be recalled that the boundary of Army Group G was shifted to the northern boundary of AOK 7 on 3/3, which may possibly be relevant, T477/103.

P.S. Those Lw. Kdo. West daily reports do sometimes make mistakes about types and units, I think. I found some confusion when I was researching operations by 1.(F)/123 — it looked as if they had mixed up some reconnaissance reports from Bf 109 and Ar 234 units.

Re: JG 2 March 1945

Gentlemen,
Uffz. Werner Pilhock crashed in the back-country forest of Mittelheim (now Oestrich-Winkel, the Hyphen in the word).
Her was found weeks later und buried at 29.04.1945. The exact area, where he was found is not given the local Archive.
