FW 200 Condor floatplane

I have just found a model of a FW 200 Condor floatplane on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-72-German-...item3cecb64eb2

I cannot find any references to such an aircraft in my sources. Anyone else?

Vic

Re: FW 200 Condor floatplane

Looks a bit like fantasy to me

Not impossible, but no sources mention any development in such a direction.
Would have demanded a lot of strengthening of the basic airframe as well.

Since the Germans favoured flying boats for their larger ocean landing aircraft I find it strange that Focke Wulf and Tank would have contemplated a float plane version.

Cheers
Stig

Re: FW 200 Condor floatplane

Hi, Vic...

I believe this is a definitely a product of someone's imagination... . It's the (very!) old, original Revell Fw200 kit in 1/72 scale from way back when I was a boy, with rivets the scale size of apples to boot...!

It has been fitted out with floats from somewhere, spurious markings for LG2 and dodgy-looking two-bladed propellors. Wing joints seem rather good, though... a bit of effort gone into it, certainly.

I don't think it ever entered the collective mind of Focke-Wulf's design team to bring this beast into being. As Stig said, it would require a strong airframe and that's one thing the Condor was plagued with... breaking its back, usually on landing. Interesting project, though.

Regards,

Paul

Re: FW 200 Condor floatplane

If, and that's a big if, such a construct existed, then this most likely would have been the unit it was assigned to for trials:

10.(See)/LG 2
(Unit Code 6L+)

Formation and History. (Nov 38 - Oct 39)
Formed 1 November 1938 at Travemünde by renaming Lehrstaffel (See) to evaluate new types of maritime aircraft. Believed to have been attached to Erprobungskommando Pohle (Ekdo. 88) around August 1939. Transferred from Travemünde to Berlin-Werder as 10.(F)/LG 2 on 1 September with 8 He 111s, 3 He 115s and 1 Do 18 for attachment to Aufklärungsgruppe Ob.d.L.. Reported to have taken part in the campaign in Poland, but this cannot be confirmed. In any event, no losses were recorded for the campaign. The ultimate disposition of this Staffel is also uncertain, although it is believed to have been disbanded sometime in October 1939. Circumstantial evidence suggests it may have been absorbed into 1.(F) and/or 3.(F)/Aufkl.Gr. Ob.d.L.

FpN: (L 05872)

Staffelkapitän:
Maj. Karl-Heinz Wolff ( - ) 1.9.39

There doesn't seem to be much information on this Staffel. Perhaps it was a drawing board concept cobbled together by engineers at Travemünde and it never went any further than that.

Re: FW 200 Condor floatplane

Regarding the end of 10.(See)/L.G.2, I can add the following from the KTB Gen.d.Lw.beim Ob.d.M./O.Qu 22.09.1939: Since 15.9.39 the 10. L.G.2 is disbanded and transformed (umgewandelt) in 3./K.G.30.
Reference to BA/MA RM6/170.
