Wellington LP 140 "N" 40th SQD RAF

Request help to locate crew photos , grave sites and info on F/S Hughes RAAF and rest of his 3 MIA crew which was on mission to Giurgiu possibly also Orsova on night of 3/3 June 1944 . The aircraft crashed 20 Km SSW of Pirot , Yugoslavia and the Navigator (name unknown ) was the single survivor who became POW either at Schumen Bulgaria or elsewhere .

Have you gotten Hughes files scanned from Australian National archives?

Re: Wellington LP 140 "N" 40th SQD RAF

Hello,

The aircraft in question was, Wellington X LP120 'N', not LP140 'N'.

The A705's and A9301's of both AUS415462 F/S Francis Rodney HUGHES RAAF, and AUS427959 F/S Francis Raymond SWEENEY RAAF, are already digitized.

See also:

https://awm.gov.au/index.php/collection/C1252700 download, go to p.51 of 236.

The survivor was 1481552 F/Sgt (Nav.) K SHAW RAFVR - POW.

I recommend that you carefully read pp.1-16 of Hughes' A705:

Col.

Bruggy

The link you gave brings a total new light into the case. I was not aware that
one who bailed was shot by the Bulgarians and other taken to Hospital where
died under unknown conditions. I am looking into Gen Hall's reports who put
those Bulagrians on trial in 1944. Is not the first Allied airman murdered by
Bulgarians

Great stuff!

However, there seems to be some misinformation.
They claim that one airmen was rescued by partisans, which is possible misidentification with other airmen from 40Sq who fell month later near by.

Bulgarians and their militias were, to mildly put it, very trigger happy. If they saw airmen, they would shoot first, ask questions later. In Yugoslavia, there is some 6-7 such confirmed cases, without this one.

F/S K.Shaw was POW at Schumen , indeed he was not with the partisans. Its unclear which airman as killed by the Bulgarians .

For future reference, RAF Sqns are not 40th Sqn like American just 40 Sqn
