Code Names of Coastal Command patrols

Hello,

can't find the explanation of some Coastal Command patrols, among them:

Pirate (sometimes with No.)
SA-1 (2, 3)
Crossover
Roll
Sleeve

What did these сode names mean?

Best regards,
Andrey

There is a discussion of the Crossover patrols on this link (search for Crossover):

Re: Code Names of Coastal Command patrols

The book is a multivolume work:

Australia in the War of 1939–1945. Series 3 – Air

https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1417303

This pdf file is from Vol III chapter 7. I think all the book volumes are available online if you follow the links from the first page.

As for the names, I think they are all patrol areas. SA 1 2 and 3 I think were areas between the North Sea and Atlantic (S A for Standard Area).
Pirate areas were (I believe) off the Netherlands. Areas may have moved or changed as the war progressed.

Re: Code Names of Coastal Command patrols

Hello Rolland,

thank you again!

As for SA, it seems that these were patrol lines between England and Norway, but confirmation is needed.
Maybe "Pirate" was anti-E-Boats search but again it is uncertain.
"Roll" was apparently one of antishipping tasks but details are welcomed.
Haven't any clue about "sleeve".

Best regards,
Andrey

Map with some Coastal Command patrol areas. Don't remember where I've found it.

Hello Bengt,

thank you a lot! Excellent map!

So, only "Pirate" remain unclear.

Andrey

As it turned out, Pirate were really anti-E-boat patrols. Pirate 1 & 2 are described by Admiralty war diaries on 18.3.41.

Best regards,
Andrey
