Two interesting pis from Linz Hörsching, May 1945

hi there Gang,

I just ran in two interesting pictures taken at Linz Hörsching, in May 1945, by a crew member of the 8th AF:

http://forum.armyairforces.com/downl...?file=1;213290
Which possible unit for the Me 262? JV 44?

http://forum.armyairforces.com/downl...?file=0;212568
Ju 188 W.Nr. 230 459

Glad for any other information (unit?).

Thanks in advance
Marc

Mark,

Did you notices the "white?" X under the Me 262 tailplane?

Best regards,

Me 262 A, Werknummer 500531, with an interesting chessboard camouflage scheme.

This aircraft also carries on the port side a hand painted black cross on the lower part of the rudder. According to Mark Proulx, it was added by allied forces as an identifer for further examination.

More photographs can be found in Wings of Black Cross No. 8 by Mark Proulx and in EagleFiles #5 Stormbird Colors by Brett Green and Benjamin Evans. The latter also features a color profile of this aircraft.

Thanks for the link

Philippe,

Yes, if I understand things well, the "x" means the airframe was marked by US troops for scrapping.

Ad Astra,

Thanks for your detailed information! I just popped open WOTBC 8, and there it is on p. 15.

Thanks again to both

Re: Two interesting pis from Linz Hörsching, May 1945

Hello Ad Astra, Hello Marc,

I got two pictures from that Wings of Black Cross No. 8 book;

I'm not conviced at all by the "chessboard" presence on fuselage or it's just a way to talk about that "particular/unusual camouflage" as described in the said book.
So no KG(J) 6 at all for me.
Chessboard is quite well visible on other KG(J) 6 planes and well definite, even on blurred pictures.

By the way, we can see the same "unusual camouflage" on, at least, one of the Insbruck-Hötting Me262s.

.. And another picture of 500531, here under.

Last, "X" is white on one side and black on the other side ... Same plane?
Two paint tins and two brushes?

Regards, Franck.

Hi there Franck,

Maybe it was yellow, and one of the pics was taken with an orthochromatic film?

Cheers

Re: Two interesting pis from Linz Hörsching, May 1945

To be clear, of the three published photos of this jet in WOTBC#8, I make no mention of the unit assignment for this aircraft. I also don't state "particular/unusual camouflage". In addition, the term "chessboard" was not used in any of my captions.

To quote I state "unusual pattern" which by no means implies that it is unique and applied to only one aircraft.
