Ofw. Riese, Shot down around Octbober 9th 1944

Hi All,

I had the opportunity to read some letter written by a pilot to his wife in 1944.
In one of the letters he was writing that his friend Ofw. Riese was shot down in France, Alsace and he hopes Riese survived.
Because he wrote the letter same day and never mentioned Ofw. Riese again, it’s not clear to me if Riese bailed out and survived.
Is there any info regarding a pilot Riese?
That’s all info I have.

Thanks a lot in advance
Rolf

Hi Fred,

Thanks again for your support. I don’t think this is the one I'm looking for. This because the crash was definitely around 9th of October (+/- 2 days) and the rank does not fit.
Thanks again
Rolf

Hello, this maybe something? (found in the LW Losses compiled by M. Balss):

10-10-1944 / 6./JG 106 / Heimatflug / Rot, b. Laupheim / Notlandung / Fw 190 A-8 / 0239 / BV+WG / 50% damage / StFw. Reise, Wilhelm / injured
sources: Liste-Ring; Liste-RT

Laupheim is located in Baden-Württemberg.

Hope this is of any use...

Hi John,
I believe Riese belonged to a reconnaissance unit but not 100% sure. Eventually NAG 13, but don’t want to lead in wrong direction or limit it.
This because I have an indication but no evidence.
Thanks a lot
Rolf

I believe this is WNr 350239. The only problem is that Smith/Creek say it was STKZ TV+WG. Who is right? S/C or Balss?

Cheers

I gotta ask, what are the "other sources" you gentlemen are referring too? I don't have either of the two losses mentioned here. Did Mr. Balss publish or post something that I missed or am unaware of? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. So much of the 1944 loss data is hard to find.

Jim

Balss has begun to publish (self publish I think?) a huge range of books dealing with Luftwaffe losses. I have not bought any of them....

Smith/Creek which I quoted is their three volumes about Fw 190 published by Classic. In vol 2 there is a pretty good production summary including those STKZ known to them at the time.

Cheers
Stig

Hello Jim,

Mr. Balss has in addition to his books, several Excel databases for purchase. He mainly is active on Facebook and owns a 'German Luftwaffe Losses & Claims' group there.

I guess Liste-Ring; Liste-RT point to post war-made lists by people, but I am not sure.

Kind regards,
Timon
