Re: Operation Tidal Wave: The Bloodiest Air Battle in the History of War

It is hard to imagine that there could be anything new to write about "Operation Tidal Wave" that hasn't already appeared in a dozen other books. However the author's bio is interesting and gives me hope.

About the Author
"Vincent Lupiano is a specialist in corporate communications and speechwriting. For ten years, he was a speechwriter at IBM for senior executives and a script writer / film producer director for IBM corporate films. He was also a senior editor for an IBM management publication. Vince spent four years in the United States Air Force. During that time, he was an aircraft accident investigator and learned much about airplanes and how the military functions. While stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines, he flew several missions between Clark and Vietnam helping to move loads of ammunition. He was writer / producer / announcer at Clark’s Armed Forces Radio and TV station. In this capacity, he flew three combat missions over Vietnam in F4 Phantom and F105 fighter jets, carrying a tape recorder and writing and narrating stories of his experiences for home town radio stations. He lives in Franklin Lakes, NJ."

This announcement comes as a huge surprise. For more that a decade, retired USAF officer David Klaus has devoted 20,000 hours+ to researching Tidal Wave in American, British, German and Romanian archives. I know this because I spent a lot of time helping him with information from 2015 to 2018. The quality of new information he has uncovered, especially comprehensive details from the German and Romanian side, is beyond equal. If anyone is interested, an hour spent on his website will substantiate what I've said:

So now along come two comparatively unqualified individuals with books on the same subject. This leaves me deeply saddened for Dave's sake and wondering if he will be so discouraged he turns his back on his years and years of hard work and walk away from both his forthcoming book and video.

Re: Operation Tidal Wave: The Bloodiest Air Battle in the History of War

Larry,

As someone who watches the nonfiction book industry, I can say with certainty that experts remain experts regardless of any new books that are soon to be out or that may appear in the future. My own interests are always toward the most definitive and the best researched. It did pain me to watch poor television programming that gave wrong and misleading impressions. But excellent books remain and will remain, beyond the whims of television producers.

Recently, a spate of books have been released about Italian missteps during the war. And yes, there are books by amateurs or those who are less professional who do them because they can. The internet has created, for some, this idea that important subjects can be learned in minutes.

In closing, there is no reason for alarm. There will always be one more book about this or that popular subject. However, I have built a library around the best and I would say that in terms of time and money, I would not buy anything that I thought was inferior.

Regards,
Ed

Indeed, Ed, indeed. That's why book reviews by respected critics are invaluable. If one has but $40.00 or $50.00 in ones pocket and 3 new books appear on the market at approximately the same time, which one should be chosen?

Unfortunately, Dave Klaus has substantially completed his book but keeps waiting for that ephemeral last tidbit of previously unknown detail before sending it to his publisher, so there is no telling when it might appear.
