Heaton has a very questionable record. His book Prince of Aces was withdrawn by the publisher before release because it was pointed out that it was essentially fiction.

Another volume, Four War Boer, was self published (perhaps as a result of the Prince of Aces debacle). It claimed that a Boer War veteran, in his mid 70s at least, advised the Rhodesian special forces in the 1960s. However, the Rhodesians declined to endorse the book.

The subjects of his Luftwaffe interviews have a coincidental tendency to be dead before he publishes their stories, so they are largely uncheckable unless he releases the transcripts.

Heaton should be treated as a source with extreme caution.
