Books about the Pe-2 bomber, Yak-9 and La-5 and 7 fighters

Hej all
I am looking for recommendations for the best (technical) books on the Pe-2 bomber, the Yak-9 and the La-5 and 7 fighters. Books with scale drawings are preferred.

I have the Squadron/Signal booklet on the La-5 & 7, but I am not sure how good it is. Also it was published in 1998, so something better could very likely have come out in the meantime :0)

Can anyone here give me some input. Any information is much appreciated.

All the best
Morten

I haven't seen Peter C. Smith's Pe-2 book, but it may be good. There's also a chapter on it in the Finnish book Lentäjän näkökulma IV. What sata are you seeking?

Talking of French and Pe-2, I have two books in French on Pe-2, one by Dimtry Khazanov and one by Herbert Leonard. But I'm looking forward to advices on fighter books.

Smith's Pe-2 book is not bad, is it the best, I cannot say. It lacks good scale drawings. The Pe-2 part in Jukka Raunio's Lentäjän näkökulma IV Pommikoneet is good but in Finnish. Stapfer's Petlyakov Pe-2 in action Aircraft Number 181 is IMHO one of the better ones in squadron/signal serie. IMHO seems definitely ok.

Hej all

Thanks for your input and thoughts on Peter C. Smith's the Pe-2 book.

After checking some reviews on Peter C. Smith's book it seems like a good buy. A shame that is lacks scale/technical drawings, but I may buy it anyway.
I will probably put the TopDrawings book on the Pe-2 in the basket at the same time, hoping it is accurate.

Anyone who has the volume I of Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War by Gordon and Khazanov?

All the best
Morten

Re: Books about the Pe-2 bomber, Yak-9 and La-5 and 7 fighters

Hello!

For Pe-2

Armada 13, Pe-2 (Part 1), Medved, Chazanov, 1999

Armada 18, Pe-2 (Part 2), Medved, Chazanov, 2000

See http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/biblio/s...ada/armada.htm

For Yak-9
Leipnik Dimitriy: Yak-9 (Arhiv-Press, Kiev 2000)
See https://aviapress.com/viewonekit.htm?ARX-005

Leipnik's book included enormous (A2 or A1 size) paper sheet with scale 1/72 (& 1/48 IIRC) drawings of various subtypes etc. I have misplaced mine (not lost!) and I have heard many of the copies miss the drawing insert. Too easy to snitch.

La-5 not able to help with anything of the class the above ones. EDIT MBI booklet, see new posting below (thanks to Jukka)

Cheers,
Kari

Re: Books about the Pe-2 bomber, Yak-9 and La-5 and 7 fighters

Smith's Pe-2 book has some photos from technical manual, e.g. on the structure of wing, engine cooling system, the placement of its electronic motors and layout/location of fuel and hydraulic fluid distribution. Also several photos of technical details.

Gordon & Khazanov, Soviet Combat Aircraft of the Second World War Vol 1. No technical drawings, 3-view drawings somewhat basic. And my Soviet a/c specialist friend was not altogether happy at least with its description of La-5, -5F and -5FN but I cannot recall exactly his criticism other than according to him it is somewhat vague. I talked on that with him last time some 5 years ago and the magazine (feeniks 3•2014) in which his article on the development of La-5 was published is somewhere in my heaps of magazines and just now I don't have time to dig it out.

Re: Books about the Pe-2 bomber, Yak-9 and La-5 and 7 fighters

For the La-5 and La-7, the best reference in English probably is:

Moore, J.N. 2016. Lavochkin Fighters of the Second World War. Fonthill. 208 p.

The book does not include any scale drawings, but does have a selection of photographs and images from technical manuals, a section of colour profiles and a few colour photographs of surviving airframes. Apart from the LaGG-3, La-5 and La-7, which obviously form the backbone of the book, there are also short chapters on the La-9 and -11, and Lavochkin's post-war jets.
