Wreck of Bf 109 G6
Dear sirs, we are a group of divers and, recently, we returned to the scene of the crash of a Bf 109 G6 unknown. The plane is located underwater at about 100 kilometers north of Rome. In the past we have identified the serial number of the DB 605 ( DB 605 - 00201577 R7 12972) , but we have not found the Werknummer. However, we found a sheet of aluminum, very thick, in which is engraved (on the outside), the number 1504 (see photos).
It may be the Werknummer? Thanks in advance Victor |

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G6
Victor, congratulations on your discovery.
When you said it is underwater, is this in the sea or a lake? It might help in identifying it. |

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G6
It's probably in a lake, 100km north of Rome is far from the sea.

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G6
Its difficult to be sure, but that piece looks very much like the sump plate/cover from a DB engine? If so, then clearly not a Werke Nummer...

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G6
Dear sirs, thank you for your attention. The wreck is located underwater at a depth of -26 meters, between the towns of Tarquinia and Montalto. Not long ago a fisherman founded a machine gun MG 131 entangled in his fishing nets.
It may be important to know that near the site of the crash (about 25 miles) were the airfields of JG 77, JG 2 and JG 51 Pick As (Canino, Tuscania and Viterbo). |

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G6
Could be this:
1944-04-14, 6./JG 77, Bf 109G-6, 162163, 10 gelbe, Bolsena, 92 km nordwestlich Roma, Luftkampf. Bruch 100 %. Flugzeugführer Uffz Wünscher, Jochen, tot Grab: Pomezia/Italien, Block J, Grab 927 Matti |

Re: Wreck of Bf 109 G6
Just to avoid some confusion, the plane was found under the sea.
For an Italian (even more so for a roman), saying "100 km North of Rome" doesn't mean really North, as we usually think diagonally, due to the orientation of the peninsula... BTW, Tarquinia and Montalto di Castro are really next to the coastline.
