ZG76 losses 22 June 1940

Hi guys

I have a note that Bf110s of ZG76 were in combat with Hurricanes on 23 June 1940, and that the Hurricane pilots claimed 2 shot down and 5 probables. I can't find any losses for ZG76.

Correction: The unit involved should be 7./ZG26

Help appreciated

Cheers
Brian

Re: ZG76 losses 22 June 1940

Hi Brian

I cannot locate any Bf 110 losses on June 22nd (23rd is a typo).
Neither Vasco/Cornwell nor Archambault/Taghorn mention any such losses in their Bf 110 books. Looks like 615 Sq was seriously overclaiming.

Cornwell in his BoF Then and Now is not even 100% certain that a damaged He 111 was from this action, which means he could not find any lost He 111 (one possibly damaged), no lost/damaged Bf 110 and not even a Ju 52/3m which 615 Sq had thrown in for good measure.

Cheers
Stig

Thanks, Stig.

Regarding the Ju52 claimed possibly shot down, we still have the Lufthansa Ju52 in contention, as noted in Flight magazine:

According to a report from Zurich, the German General Fritz Loeb, who was in command of the German air forces on the Dutch and French coasts, was making a reconnaissance flight when a British fighter shot down the machine in which he was flying, and he was killed.

Has this been disproved?
Cheers

Brian

This has been doing the rounds following an initial query from me:

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showth...light=Brussels

Crash which appears not to have been due to enemy action was nowhere near Rouen and in any case, why would they be using a Lufthansa Ju 52 for a recce mission?

Chris
