Emblem on a Storch

Hi guys,

Does anybody recognise this unit emblem? It was on a Storch that landed near 29.Inf.Div. (XXXXVII. Panzerkorps, Panzergruppe 2, Heeresgruppe Mitte) in early August 1941. I can't find anything similar here:
https://www.wwiidaybyday.com/emblems...blems2main.htm

And although I have quite a few pics of the plane, it's call-sign doesn't appear in any of them. [Edit: I found a B/W pic and have added it.]

Many thanks!
Jason

Re: Emblem on a Storch

It's the night watchman from Eschwege, used as emblem by 5.(H)/23 during 1941 in Central Russia. The unit code of the Storch was 6K+PN.

Re: Emblem on a Storch

Hi Merlin

I'm doubting.
The city emblem of Eschwege looks different.
Can you show the emblem of 5.(H)/AGr.23 ?

best wishes

Re: Emblem on a Storch

It's not the city emblem of Eschwege but the "Dietemann" a symbol figur of the town.

Here is an image of the Dietemann.

I am also not convinced about the emblem interpretation. The asisbiz link shows the Baron Münchhausen holding a telescope and sitting on a cannon ball emblem. This is identified as the emblem of 4.(F)/Aufkl.Gr 14. Page 135 of Luftwaffe Emblems by Barry Ketley.

Hi. Definitely has all the key characteristics of the Münchhausen emblem of 4(F)14 even if some of the finer details are a bit unclear.

Re: Emblem on a Storch

Hi Jason,

Could you kindly post a couple of other photos of the Fi-156 showing the emblem, however distant or faint? It might help clear up the interpretation.

Thank you
Andre

Re: Emblem on a Storch

Any one who has the book 'Emblem der Luftwaffe Band 1 by Urbanke Petrick Stemmer Balke' will know that this emblem is without a doubt
5.(H)Auf.Kl.Gr. 23. Buy the book and look at page 111.
