P-38s with flash suppressors

Did the 20th or 55th Fighter Groups fit flash suppressors (flared ends) to the centre two 0.5 in mgs on its P-38s

I have looked at lots of photos and come to the conclusion that they did not. Can anyone confirm of deny?

Re: P-38s with flash suppressors

Would day fighters need flash suppressors?

Re: P-38s with flash suppressors

That is the conclusion that I came to, therefore the a/c that has them is a bit different.

I think I have found the second Intruder Detachment P-38 after over a decade of looking

I am curious, is the photo? you refer to that shows flash suppressors on the P-38 Miss Ann?

We had a discussion about the plane and its intruder role 10 years ago. The discussion had a link to a photo which still works.

There is also photo here (see 4th post), click on it to enlarge:

and when you enlarge it, you "might" be seeing flash suppressors on two of the guns.

Re: P-38s with flash suppressors

No, I have known about Miss Ann for a long time.

There were two P-38s and two P-51s assigned to the Intruder Detachment.

I think I have found the second one, unless it was common to add flash suppressors, in which case I have a nice photo of a basic P-38

regards

Martin
