Spitfire Claim

Can anyone provide information as to who shot down the Spitfire V of Sergeant Hugh Bowen-Morris and the circumstances. It took place on June 23rd, 1941 in QJ-O, R6761.

Thanks in advance for any insight...

Re: Spitfire Claim

Mark: if you had a time or whether it was Circus 19 (c.1320-1445 hrs) or Circus 20 (TO 1930-ish) might help but on the former the Germans claimed 3 Spitfires, the latter 7 and there were not that many lost that day

Chris:

Thanks for taking the time to reply... I am sure you have other more important tasks at hand...

At this time, all I have is shot down during a convoy protection sortie off France on 23rd June 1941 in Spitfire V R6761. A cannon shell exploded in the cockpit and rendered his right arm useless, which my photos would support. He was taken to the Luftwaffe Hospital at St. Omer where his right arm was amputated.

Thanks again for any insight.

Re: Spitfire Claim

Nothing springs out as being lost on 'Convoy Protection' but the F540 might give more clues

Re: Spitfire Claim

All

Reading Franks new Fighter Command's air war 1941 he states Bowen-Morris was shot down during Circus 19.

It seems no crash place is known (or at least not stated anywhere) so with the general overclaiming from both sides, it can only be speculation who might be the correct claimer from the Luftwaffe side.

Cheers
Stig
