VF-45 victory list

In truth I am looking to have details of VF-45 because Lt JB Cain was a member of the unit and claimed two shared kills and two probables/damaged that I can't find. Cain was a technical adviser to "The Bridges as Toko-Ri", my favourite Korean War movie.

I don't have the eminent Mr Frank Olynyk's USN list - I have three other lists and they are without doubt the most shabby overused files in my library. How they have survived the last twenty years is more a credit to my butterfly mind (CBI, Foreign Squadrons in the RAF and USAAS WW1) which shifts from one to another is a miracle. The only reason I don't have the others is because they are out of print or ridiculously expensive from third-party sellers. I digress...

Cain is my project, any information on his aerial (including two probables?)or ground victories (27?), or a victory list of VF-45 is appreciated.

P.S. I am a Scot, living in Edinburgh and your USN/USMC vs Japanese operations is on my reading list for the next few months. I keep learning.

Best regards

Keith

Re: VF-45 victory list

To make clear I have the "Stars and Bars" volume, and I know the Cain bio in that lists his confirmed kills and those he shared (without stating the co-claimants), and does not list any unconfirmed victories.

Re: VF-45 victory list

I presume you are aware of his write up in the Golden Eagles Chronolog.

If not, see

http://www.epnaao.com/

Click on link to "Chronolog" under History (this downloads a PDF of the latest version) and go to page 570.

Re: VF-45 victory list

Individual claims are not my thing but VF-45's history shows Cain's victories as follows:

16 Feb: 1 Tojo, 1 Tony, 1 Zeke shared with Lt(jg) D.R. Paul

19 March: 1 Jill

6 April: 1 Hamp, 1 Zeke, 1 Val, 1 Zeke shared with Ens. H. Nida

7 April: 1 Val

for a total of eight.

Re: VF-45 victory list

From his flight log:

16 Feb: 1 Tojo, 1 Tony, 1 Zeke shared with Lt(jg) D.R. Paul: 71818

19 March: 1 Jill: 72025

6 April: 1 Hamp, 1 Zeke, 1 Val, 1 Zeke shared with Ens. H. Nida: 71912

7 April: 1 Val: 71854

No indication in his flight log of any probables or ground claims.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: VF-45 victory list

As regards ground claims the history states that "Credit for planes destroyed on the ground was not given to individuals".
