Found Wreck of P 47 Serial Number 42-75705
Dear sirs,
last year we found the wreckage of a P 47 underwater to 25 meters depth, off the coast of Montalto di Castro (100 km NW of Rome). We were finally able to read the Serial Number of the aircraft (42-75705). The plane is a P 47 D - 15 D, MACR 4637, destroyed the 04/14/1944 after a dogfight with German aircraft of JG 77 over the lake of Bolsena. The plane was piloted by Second Lieutenant Neil H. Gundersen, 57th FG, 64th FS "Black Scorpions", who was taken prisoner by the Germans and liberated in 1945. We also know that the pilot died in 1973. We would like to have some more news of the pilot and see if you can get a picture of her. Thank you in advance! Victor |
