Picture of "The Messerschmitt Me 109 @ Barretts Car Showroom 1940"?
Hi
I was reading at http://www.barrettskent.co.uk/about-us/history/ of the "The Messerschmitt Me 109 @ Barretts Car Showroom 1940?". I was wondering if any one had any details of this Aircraft and if at all any picture remains of this Aircraft while being present at the Barretts Car Showroom 1940? Many thanks Sujoy Clearing up after the bomb in the Garage If most people had gone to war, the war came to Barretts in October 1940. The Kentish Gazette ran a (successful) campaign to raise £5000 to buy a Spitfire. To help this fund-raising project a Messerschmitt Me 109 that had crash landed intact and was put on display in the Garage. In 10 days 3885 people saw it, raising £88 for the fund. The exhibition closed on 12th October. On Monday the 14th the Luftwaffe accidentally got its revenge. A lone raider came out of some low cloud and dropped 2 high explosive bombs on the High Street, causing several fatalities and much damage, and 2 incendiaries, one of which fell through the garage roof damaging two buses, some offices and the Me 109! The roof was repaired, but not the offices, and the war moved to the rest of Canterbury. Barretts survived unscathed in the heavy Baedeker raids of June 1942. |

Wasn't this Karl Raisinger's aircraft? There are many photos of it in a showroom. He was with 3./JG 77 and POW 25 Oct 40

Re: Picture of "The Messerschmitt Me 109 @ Barretts Car Showroom 1940"?
Hi
This Aircraft as mentioned in Mombeek, Wadman & Pegg's book was displayed at Rootes Motors Limited Maidstone Kent and the one that I have mentioned was displayed in Barrett's Car Showroom of Canterbury... so are they the same aircraft or two different ones...? or was it the Me109 of Fw. Xavier Ray of 8./JG53, Bf109E-1/b W.Nr. 4034 which crash landed on 2/11/40 at 0905hrs near Lower Hardres Kent ? Lower Hardres Kent and Canterbury are quiet close... Where as Gefreiter. Karl Raisinge's Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3, Work Nr. 5104 Code: 13 + (Red) crashed at Harveys Cross Farm, Iford, North Saltdean, Sussex... So the Aircraft at Barrett's Car Showroom of Canterbury may be is a different one than Karl Raisinge's Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 ? |

Re: Picture of "The Messerschmitt Me 109 @ Barretts Car Showroom 1940"?
Hi Leo,
As stated in the Crash Report:- "Fw. Xavier Ray of 8./JG53, Bf109E-1/b W.Nr. 4034. Report No.3/139 Me 109 crashed on 2/11/40 at 0905hrs near Lower Hardres. Map reference R.5601. Markings 6+I. All in black outlined white. Camouflage yellow dappled green grey all over. Vertical red band 10" wide round centre of engine cowling. Spinner red without usual hole at the tip". So the Me109 displayed in Barretts Car Showroom in 1940 is probably not same as the Karl Raisinger Me109 displayed at Rootes Motors Limited Maidstone Kent.... Does any one have the picture of the Aircraft that was displayed in Barretts Car Showroom ? Many thanks |
