July 1940 Luftwaffe losses

Hi guys

Can anyone provide details, please:

3 July 1940: 145 Squadron claimed a He111 probably destroyed off St Catherines Point at 1310; 610 Squadron claimed a Do17 off Folkestone at 1620. Any losses?

6 July 1940: 74 Squadron claimed two He111s (on probable) off Dover cira 1458+. Any losses?

8 July 1940: 74 Squadron claimed He111 off Pegwell Bay between 1047-1105. 92 Squadron claimed Do17 probable near Bristol. Any losses?

9 July 1940: 602 Squadron claimed Ju88 off May Island. Any loss?

I'm confident someone will have information, so thanks in advance.

Cheers
Brian

Re: July 1940 Luftwaffe losses

Brian,

3 July 1940: 145 Squadron claimed a He111 probably destroyed off St Catherines Point at 1310; 610 Squadron claimed a Do17 off Folkestone at 1620. Any losses?

I have no He111 loss recorded on the day to relate to the No.145 Squadron claim. See my response of 24 August to your earlier post for details of the 610 Squadron claim.

6 July 1940: 74 Squadron claimed two He111s (on probable) off Dover cira 1458+. Any losses?

The only He111 loss reported on this date was a 4./KG1 machine but no location recorded. Ff: Oberlt Walter HARBECK, Beo: Lt Christian HACKER, Bm: Fw Paul NOACK, Bf: Uffz Herbert SACK, & BSch: Uffz Hermann WEICHELT all missing.

8 July 1940: 74 Squadron claimed He111 off Pegwell Bay between 1047-1105. 92 Squadron claimed Do17 probable near Bristol. Any losses?

The He111 was an aircraft of the Stabsstaffel KG1 that ditched 6 km off Boulogne after reporting an attack by five RAF fighters. Ff: Oberlt Hans-Martin PAULSEN, Bm: Fw Fritz LEINERT, Bf: Uffz Paul HERTEL, & BSch: Gefr Ludwig HOETZ all drowned.

I have no Do17 loss on the day to relate to the No.92 Squadron claim.

9 July 1940: 602 Squadron claimed Ju88 off May Island. Any loss?

I believe that the only Ju88 losses on this date were two KG51 machines both lost/damaged on domestic flights.

Please contact me off-thread when you are free for a lunch meeting.

Re: July 1940 Luftwaffe losses

Thanks Peter - I thought you might respond. Many thanks.

One further query - on 8 July Allard of 85 Squadron claimed a He111 shot down off Felixstowe. Any ideas?

Will contact you re lunch asap.

Cheers
Brian

Re: July 1940 Luftwaffe losses

There were only two He111s reported lost on 8 July 1940. An aircraft of 1.(F)/120 shot down by No.602 Squadron during a reconnaissance sortie over the Firth of Forth, and the Stab KG1 machine tipped into the Channel by No.74 Squadron as detailed in my previous post.

Looking at the times of respective engagements, I suppose it is possible that this was also subject of an earlier attack by Allard, but as we do not have details of its precise mission this remains speculative.

Re: July 1940 Luftwaffe losses

Hi Peter, hope you see this!
Since this original posting was some 6 years ago, i wonder whether subsequent information may have come to light on the demise of Oblt Walter Harbeck and his crew on the 6.7.40, ie. location, target, or a/c identity.

Any help appreciated.
Best regs,
Steve.

Re: July 1940 Luftwaffe losses

Steve,

I don't believe so & currently show it thus:

4./KG1 Heinkel He111H-2. Shot down by F/L W.E.G. Measures of No.74 Squadron 15 km west of Dover 5.30 a.m. Possibly also that attacked by P/O D.H.T. Dowding. FF Oberlt Walter Harbeck, BO Lt Christian Hacker, BF Uffz Herbert Sack, BM Fw Paul Noack, and BS Uffz Hermann Weichelt all missing. Aircraft 100% write-off.
