Re: Tinian Divert Airfield

I'm surprised. There are few interesting historical artifacts on Tininan but it is so small. Anyway.

The following concerns North Field, but, again, considering the size of Tinian, some overlapping material may be there.

Re: Tinian Divert Airfield

Thank you, Ed.

I'm sure your intentions are good but your post seems to confuse the issue of this thread.

Yes, Tinian is small however there was a vast difference between "West Field" the subject of this thread; home during WW II to the 58th BW; 40th BG, 444th BG, 462nd BG, and 468th BG.

"AND"

"North Field" an entirely different base and command hosting the 313th BW; 6th BG, 9th BG, 504th BG, 505th BG, and 509th CG

Re: Tinian Divert Airfield

This is likely my fault for not providing more data this topic related to Tinian Divert Airfield a major undertaking as an alternate support field to Anderson AFB, Guam. Here is a little more background, perhaps it will help with the broader picture of this development.

http://pacafdivertmarianaseis.com/about.html

All in all this is a good development for the Tinian economy which has been in trouble since the closure of the "troubled" Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino. It seems tax fraud is a crime after-all.

https://calvinayre.com/2016/03/04/ca...k-of-tourists/

However, back on topic this is a major expansion to the existing Tinian International Airport where West Field once existed (more or less). The intent here it seems is to provide a clear historical link to the WW II activities at West Field that might otherwise be compromised by this new development. Please be reminded that virtually nothing (structurally) of the WW II West Field remains today and that it seems is the point here to designate points with perhaps historical markers to not forget the contribution, sacrifice and historical value of those who served at this field with the 58th Bomb Wing. Edit: Including USMC units who captured the island as well as the Naval Construction Battalion who provided the infrastructure to make West Field operational.

Re: Tinian Divert Airfield

First, my apologies for the dead links in my earlier post. I attempted to remove them but the powers to be here at TOCH have limited my edit window to 48 hours so I am powerless to remove or alter those faulty/dead links; sorry for your inconvenience clicking on them.

Further information was gained on this Tinian Divert Airfield expansion of the existing Tinian International Airport. A rather deceiving airport title since flights to and from Tinian only originate/depart from Saipan or Guam where connections can be made to Asian airports with international connections.

According to Don Farrell, Tinian resident historian in resent communication there is currently only one (1) memorial marker involved, dedicated to the 58th Bomb Wing located at the existing Tinian airport passenger terminal. There is also a memorial marker to the 107th Naval Construction Battalion (NCB) located at the intersection of 8th Ave and 86th Street (see attached) but this seems north of the projected Divert Airfield expansion project.

As such this Interpretive Plan (input request) http://www.mvariety.com/cnmi/cnmi-ne...erpretive-plan may actually provided to the public more historical WW II information for both the USAAF, USN and USMC related to this site.

I have added some documents here that may help understand the back story of West Field and the future. If you are interested in any of these attachments please capture them ASAP. Given the individual member data limits established by this TOCH forum these documents/attachments could be removed without notice to make room for new attachments in new posts/threads.
