Re: Japanese bomber photo 4 - 8

Ed the plane behind the "Peggy" (not "Betty") is a Yokosuka P1Y1 "Frances" one of 3 taken from Yokosuka to the US on 3 Nov. 1945 on the escort carrier USS "Barnes" CVE20; she made 4 ferry trips in 1945. ID numbers were chalked on the rear fuselage.
They were given the Evaluation numbers FE1700 / 1701 / 1702.

Re: Japanese bomber photo 4 - 8

Nick,

I appreciate your helpful reply. The disposition of captured Japanese aircraft is less well known than for the other Axis countries.

Re: Japanese bomber photo 4 - 8

The other photo labelled "Captured Me Bf 110 fighter w/American markings ~ Technical Air Intelligence Team", sold for US$49.

It's actually a Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu "Nick" being evaluated. I wonder how much more it might have gone for if more actual Toryu aficionados knew to bid for it?

(By the way - are these original photos, or modern reprints?)

Ed--Geoff. These are the enemy aircraft evaluated and tested by US forces, with designators for the various commands which accepted them eg. "FE", "T-2", "EB" etc.
As per Joe Bahgher's site;

Re: Japanese bomber photo 4 - 8

A minor ( probably superfluous) addition to the post. The dark colour on "Peggy" and "Frances" is not camouflage but the anti-corrosive plastic coating ( "Plastiphane") used for on-deck deliveries; it could be peeled off quickly unlike the previous material " Par-al-ketone" which had to be removed with kerosene, white spirit or various solvents and washed off.

A small fighter like a P-51 needed about 30 gallons of Plastiphane for treatment.

It was standard in 1944-45 and also seen on some deck-loaded aircraft for Korea post-war.

Re: Japanese bomber photo 4 - 8

Nick,

Thank you for that valuable information. A while ago, there was a debate about what was used to coat the various captured aircraft coming over from Europe. We came to the same conclusion.

Best,
Ed
