Re: 16 June 1944

Thank you Neil. I would like to expand on the words "professionally produced." It takes time to not only research such a book, and assemble the accounts in a readable way,
but some idea of how, and why, to select a certain font/typeface, how to layout the pages and so on. That's why I rarely look at lulu as a source of quality books. Others may feel differently.

Re: 16 June 1944

Ed,
to your information, I made my own pdf layout in InDesign. It is not MS Word text with placed photos only I believe you will find this one properly layouted and Lulu is only the way how to get it to the world. (Book in Slovak language we produce in bulks of 300-500 pieces, and sell directly. BUt due to the high postal fees abroad, I decided this slution for the engligh language books).
best regards

Peter

Peter,

Thank you for your reply. The company I work for also uses InDesign in some cases. I certainly understand the postage situation. I wish you much success.

Best,
Ed

Very good and interesting book, I liked it very much so thanks for the effort. By the way using the Lulu method it took five days for me to get a copy from where it was printed in Australia. Versus three weeks plus horrendous postage if it had come from Europe.

Regards

Russell

Re: 16 June 1944

I fully agree with Neil Page's detailed review and Russell's comments.

Kassak's new book is similar in content and format to his earlier book "An Ordinary Day in 1945", published by Mushroom Model Pubs in 2005. This time, the spotlight is on the attacks by the USAAF's 15th AF against the Reich's oil facilities in Austria and Slovakia on June 16 1944.

My impressions of the book:
  • Excellent concept, fine execution
The book starts with useful background info on German oil production in the aforementioned countries, and outlines the USAAF's objectives and planning. It then describes the various missions and their effectiveness in detail, from the perspective of all participants (the USAAF bombers and fighters, and the German, Hungarian and Slovakian defenders.) It concludes with a description of the aftermath, plus detailed appendices.
  • Impressive research
It provides comprehensive details on the routes, times, altitudes and formations for each raid, plus many personal accounts. It's well illustrated throughout with maps and diagrams, document reproductions, and many photos of aircraft, aircrew, and aerial views of the targets. It also includes lists of losses and claims for both sides, and an extensive list of sources.
  • Great layout, formatting and proofreading
The book is laid out neatly, using a very readable font. It's obvious that much attention was paid to consistent formatting, the placement of illustrations, and the location of page breaks. The proofreading was good too -- I spotted just a handful of spelling mistakes and some missing articles ("the", "a", "an".)
    All-in-all, a phenomenal job for a one-man effort!
  • Very effective publishing choice
It's an attractive, inexpensive volume, printed on good paper, with very quick delivery. A real bargain.
Although this book focuses on just one day's missions, its detailed scope provides an insight into the planning and preparation that went into all such operations. Hope to see more titles like this!
