Dear Alex.
I have the weekly activities roster of Foreign aircraft, inlcuding captured aircraft evaluated in the USA, from 16 October 1943 to 25 December 1944. It details many aircraft type (British, German, Italian & Japanese) the project engineer, location and remarks. There is no mention of any Vickers Wellington on status during this time period. Let me dig out another listing of British aircraft at Wright Field prior to the above period, and I will get back to you. Norman Malayney |

Hi both;
One Wellington flew westbound via Iceland in 1941. (First Westbound crossing by landplane via Iceland). Z8771 dep Reykjavik for Gander, Newfoundland in late evening 21.08.1941 - landing there early in the morning next day. ´Reverse-Lend-Lease´ I belive. It went to USA - Wright Field likely - but may have been out of action by Oct 1943. cheers ed |

Found it on Wright Field film, very much like find more detailed, preferably with serial visible. I seem remember seeing colour pic in a magazine in good old 1980s. -Ed

Bruce Robertson RAF serial book (Midland 1987) has them Wellington Mk.IC Z8771 and Z8772, latter be DW.1 (DWI ?) version. Two flew out in August 41 (by OADU) via Reykjavik and Gander, I have both arrival times in Reykjavik, but not tie-up or departure of first one (Arrived from Prestwick 30.07.41) but other "Experimental Long Range Wellington" flew west 21/22.08.41. Mk.IV is discussed below but MK.IC engine cowlings show in video. One Wellington shows twice in video if you look closely.

Z8772, was definitely not a Wellington DWI/II. Known Data on Vickers Wellington Types 418 and 419 (DWIs & DWIIs): Mark IA Vickers Type: 418. Description: DWI Mark I - Engine/Generator, Ford V8 Engines: Pegasus XVII Conversions - 4 from Mk IA. Initial conversions from Mk IAs were: P2518, P2521, P2522 and P9223. Mks -Various. Vickers Type: 419. Description: DWI Mk.II - Engine/Generator - DH Gipsy VI Engines: Pegasus XVII Conversions - 4 from Type 418, 11 conversions from Mk I, 1 conversion from Mk IC. A further 12 DW I, Mk IIs were flown: L4212, L4221, L4227, L4235, L4352, L4356, L4358. L4374, L4391, L7771. R2701 and HX682.
