Guernsey, 24 February 1945
An ULTRA intercept of the Channel Islands Day Report for the above date includes this:
1 Wildcat shot down off east coast of Guernsey by Guernsey Flak. A/c crashed in sea. Pilot (English Sergeant) taken prisoner. This isn't included in Wikipedia's list of Channel Islands crashes and incidents. Does anyone know more about it? |

Re: Guernsey, 24 February 1945
Nick,
An F6F Hellcat wreck was recovered from the sea in the 70' north of the coast of Herm, this island being east and close to Guernsey. This loss has never been really solved to my knowledge and is said to have happened in June 1944 on the wikilist. Thanks to your finding, I Believe that the Germans may have identified the Hellcat for a Wildcat by mistake and that we have now the exact date of the incident. I hope some that Fleet Air Arm historians could find a match now! Mickaël |

Re: Guernsey, 24 February 1945
Nick,
It appears that this mystery was also brought up on this forum in 2007... See http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/archiv...p?t-10360.html Regards, Leendert |
