Contrary to the article you posted, children were mobilized to help in the war effort. Much like the Hitler Youth and the DAK (German Labor Corps) and RAD (Reich Labor Service),
children as young as 11 were encouraged to train as pilots. Scroll down to the bottom and see the entry second from left.
