Identity of Lost Airman in Afrika - 28.12.1941

Hi,

Can anyone help identify the man below? - He was lost on the 28th December 1941 in an air death - the caption also said he was a fighter pilot but not sure about that.

Were there any anircrew lost on this day/

Thanks

Rick

No fighter loss AFAIK but several bombers were attacked by British fighters during the day:
_ Sgt. McKay of 260 Sqn claimed a Ju 88 shot down in the morning in Agebadia area.
_ Sub Lt Fell of 806 Sqn claimed a he 111 probably destroyed near Tobruk.
_ two Fulmars of the RN Fulmar Flight attacked a Ju 88 near Sidi Barrani in the evening, one being shot down by return fire.

No idea of the real bomber losses/damage suffered by the Luftwaffe.

Only find one crew this date in that area:

2./KFlg.Gr. 606 problable area Marsala

Lt. Heribert Beiwl KIA
Uffz. Herbert Diem KIA
Gefr. Eberhard Weisspflug MIA
Gefr. Ludwig Ponader KIA

so it may Lt. Beiwl ?

The FF at the photo is an Oberleutnant, not an Leutnant like Heribert Beiwl.

Re: Identity of Lost Airman in Afrika - 28.12.1941

I have two Ju 88 lost that day in operations in the Med. One of them during armed recce to the west of Sicily, and I guess that's the crew above. The other one I can't place, but it would have come from X. Fliegerkorps, and therefore LG1 if active above Africa. Maybe that helps. There's this excellent book on LG1 that might have info?

All the best

Andreas

The writing below the picture ist not clear to read.
Could there also "42" stand for ?
The last number looks like a "2" ?

best wishes

LG1 didn't lose a plane that day, but two the day before.
