Spitfire Mk IX EN522

Hello,

Seeking details of the loss of Spitfire Mk IX EN522 ?
Lost while with 611 Squadron on the 28th July 1944.
Pilot was Flg/Off. John Thomas CLIFFORD who was Killed.

From what little I have it seems that the a/c was on a Ground Attack mission near Pontivy, France.

Anything about the reason for the loss and how the pilot met his maker please i.e, is it known if he survived the crash and was he captured before his death ?

Alex

Alex

The only extra detail I could find was in Fighter Command War Diaries by Foreman. He states the aircraft was shot down by Flak near Vannes on a Rhubarb mission.

I in turn wonder why an aircraft belonging to a unit with ADGB was on a Rhubarb to France. I thought 2nd TAF was dealing with all offensive work by day at this stage, but obviously that is wrong.

Cheers
Stig

Hello Stig,

Thank you for the reply.
I had not looked at Formans vols so the extra is welcome, Who Shot him down is now a question. Which Flak Unit, Germans or Allies, is it known I wonder ?

Thanks again
Alex
