Franz Schiess JG53
During the Polish campaign, he saw service in the Army before transferring to the Luftwaffe and undergoing fighter pilot training in 1940.
Does anyone have details of this period? Born in 1921 he's presumably only joined the Heer in 1939. To fight in Poland would be a bit early to be a trained soldier. At this time the German Armed Forces were stuffed with well-trained experienced soldiers and airmen. Also why in the army? Is this a mistranslation of Wehrmacht (the Armed forces)? best regards Keith |

Re: Franz Schiess JG53
Polish campaign right, but Army is not correct, at this time he saw service with a RAD (Reicharbeitsdienst/Reich Labour Service) unit behind the front lines.
Just after this he came to the Luftwaffe and after fighter training in Feb 41 to JG 53. |
